The Manager of the Remittance Unit of the SG-Ghana Limited, Mr Nii Amaa Laryea, has encouraged children to read widely to enable them sharpen their knowledge in current affairs.
He believed when children cultivate the habit of reading, their knowledge base and vocabulary would increase, hence would be able to express themselves very well.
Mr Laryea gave the advice during a presentation ceremony to award prizes to 13 children who excelled in an Essay competition code-named [the Awaa Waa School Essay Competition].
The essay competition, which was organised by the Junior Graphic and MoneyGram, was on the topic, ‘Why is it important to buy made-in-Ghana goods’
It was open to all basic school pupils in Class Four up to the junior high school.
The first prize of GH¢3,000 and MoneyGram souvenirs, went to Ms Afua Sakyibea Keteku of the First Baptist School, Tema.
For emerging second and third, Ms Regina Enu of the Mfantsipim Basic School in Cape Coast and Master Nuhu Niamatu of the Wa Municipal Model JHS, Wa, took home GH¢2,500 and GH¢2,000 respectively, and MoneyGram souvenirs.
The other 10 winners received GH¢1,000 each in addition to MoneyGram souvenirs.
During the presentation ceremony, Mr Ato Kwamina Baiden, a representative of MoneyGram, said the competition was organised in partnership with the Junior Graphic to encourage children to read, write and at the same time win fabulous prizes.
