In the wake of the devastating floods that have engulfed communities in the three Tongu Districts of the Volta region concerns have been raised over poor sanitation area.
Access to health care has also been adversely affected heightening concerns among residents and key stakeholders.
Though the Ghana Health Service says it is on guard to deal with any outbreak, the service is calling for a multidimensional support.
Several public toilets, latrines and refuse dumps have been swept away by the floods in the South, North and Central Tongu districts by the resulting floods from the spillage of the Akosombo dam, heightening fears of a possible epidemic outbreak in these areas
There is also a surge in open defecation particularly at Mepe the worst hit community.
Access to healthcare services have also been adversely affected prompting a rapid response from the Ghana Health Service.
The North Tongu District Director of Health is urging the District Assembly to provide a good number of mobile toilets to curb the menace.
He also revealed that several mosquito nets have been distributed to the victims but appealed for more.
As part of its rapid response mechanism, the Ghana Health Service in the Volta region is closely monitoring situations across the communities to enable them deal with any epidemic outbreak.
But the Deputy Regional Director in charge of Public Health, Dr. Senanu Dzokoto says his outfit needs support in these difficult times.
