Executive Secretary of the Ghana Federation of labour, Abraham Koomson has said the planned demonstration by labour to protest the burden of unjustified taxes and increases in tariffs by government is a step in the right direction.

“What else can we do?I don’t think anybody will want to accommodate this kind of increases. Those of us who belong to the manufacturing industry are incurring a lot of losses. We thought government will rather show mercy on them, but government keeps on piling taxes on them,” Koomson lamented in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.

Organised Labour after a crucial meeting Thursday announced a two-day nationwide demonstration next week over increases in petroleum and utility tariffs as well as the newly introduced taxes.

The unions have outlined a series of programmes set to compel government respond to their demands.

The planned demonstration comes after a meeting between government and Organised Labour hit a deadlock on Tuesday, January 5.

Koomson who is livid at the current economic situation in the country said although it is incumbent on government to fix the economic problems, that should not be at the expense of the ordinary Ghanaian.

“I don’t think is fair for us to bear the brunt of the mismanagement of the economy. The policies that they’re pursuing are not good for our survival.”
