The election of the presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Tuesday hit a snag as the Assembly failed to get a PM for the fifth time in a row.
The controversial elections was rather rocked with confusion with Assembly members abandoning the voting process, after a free-for-all fight broke in the middle of the polls.
Both candidates, Nana Kofi Senya and Nana Adumhene failed their bid in yet another encounter, as the two were unable to reach two-thirds majority required by law.
The two contestants, Nana Kofi Senya – perceived to be the New Patriotic Party (NPP) choice and Nana Adumhene, reportedly the National Democratic Congress (NDC) favorite failed to secure the two-thirds majority votes required by the law.
The Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Lawrence Sarpong supervised the polls.
The Regional Minister, John Alexander Ackon who witnessed the elections expressed disappointment in how voting panned out today, saying the two must soften their stance for them to reach a middle ground with the protracted stalemate.
The Regional Minister has been appointed to oversee a mediation process between the two parties, but said he needs a bit of time to delve into the thorny issues in the coming weeks.
At the end of voting, Nana Kofi Senya secured 68 votes as against his contender, Nana Adumhene who garnered 66 votes
The KMA has 147 members, 91 of them elected, 44 appointed and 10 ex-officio members, who are Members of Parliament (MPs).
