Waste Landfills Company, a private Waste Management Company has undertaken a fumigation exercise at the Abokobi-Pantang Landfill and its environs in the Ga East Municipality of the Greater Accra region.
The exercise was aimed at warding off the outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases within the catchment area of the landfill site.
The Pantang Government Hospital and its surrounding communities were also fumigated.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, General Manager of Waste Landfills Company, Peter Kwei Dagadu, disclosed that “we are supposed to spray here on a daily basis but every quarter we come around to spray as part of our CSR, and we go a kilometre beyond the entire area of Abokobi to spray.”
He added “…it will be recalled that Abokobi Landfill was asked to be closed down by the government, despite the fact that about 14 trucks come from areas including Adentan, Ashioman, Ablorh-Agya and its suburbs to dump refuse which has piled up to about 32 metres square heap.”
Mr. Dagadu gave the assurance that his outfit will continue to work diligently to keep Abokobi clean.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ga East, John Kwao Sackey, commenting on the event lauded Waste Landfills Company and encouraged them to continue doing their best to support the people of Abokobi.
He said his outfit has also through the collaboration and efforts of other assemblies ensured that a permanent recycling plant is built in Teshie.
According to him, following the outbreak of cholera in Accra a few months ago, a committee was set up by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development to come out with recommendations on how to curb the disease in areas that were hardly hit.
Mr. Sackey explained that another key reason for the exercise was to control the breed of mosquitoes.
