The rate of inflation for August rose from July’s 16.7%  to 16.9%, official report say.

There was also a rise in the rate for imported items (15.2 in July to 17.3 in August).

Locally produced goods on the other hand slumped to 16.7% in August from July’s 17.3%.

On regional basis, the Greater Accra recorded the highest rate of 20.1% with the Ashanti Region following with 18.5% while the Upper East Region recorded the lowest rate of 11.8%.

Year-on-year, the non-food and non-alcoholic beverages category recorded a rate of 8.5% – a 0.1 percentage point below July’s, while the non-food inflation group recorded a year-on-year rate of 21.5 % in August 2016 – 0.3% higher than July’s.

The government statistician, Philomena Nyarko, blamed the rise in the August inflation rate on the Non- food sector and the increase in import inflation rate.

According to her, prices of goods are on the ascendancy due to uncertainties around the impending elections.
