COP Nathan Kofi Boakye

The people of Kumasi in the Ashanti region are calling on President Nana Akufo Addo to bring back the former Ashanti Regional Police Commander COP Nathan Kofi Boakye following the Delta Force attack.

The residents are sure that the brave Police Commander would have crashed members of the Delta Force if he were to still be in charge of the region.

Members of the vigilante group Delta Force afiliated to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the Kumasi Circuit Thursday and freed their colleagues who are being prosecuted for attacking the Ashanti Regional security coordinator Mr. George Agyei three weeks ago. The group also vandalized court properties.

The 13 members who were detained in connection with the attack had been remanded to appear before court on 20th April 2017, but their angry colleagues released them by going through the back door of the Court building used by only the Judge.

Stoutly built members of Delta Force on 24th March stormed the Regional Coordinating Council and forcibly ejected the Regional Security Coordinator claiming they couldn’t work with Mr. Agyei because he is not a native of the Ashanti Region. It took the timely intervention of the police to save the situation and restore law and order.

The angry men had earlier destroyed some office equipment in their bid to drive out Mr Agyei.

Their action was roundly condemned by a large section of the public who called for their arrest. Less than 24 hours after the act, the leader of the group Kwadwo Bamba was arrested by the Police.

Other members were subsequently arrested and charged for the offence of conspiracy to assault and assaulting a public officer and causing unlawful damage.

Members of the group then apologized to the President and the entire Ghanaians promising not to repeat such reprehensible acts, but they couldn’t honour their pledge following the attack on the court.

Residents of Kumasi in an interview hold the view that COP as radical as he is when he’s brought back to the region will tame the likes of the Delta Force and restore law and order in the region.

If Kofi Boakye were to be here, it would have been very good, because he was a discplined Police Commander who will not take such nonsense. He’s not here and Delta Force is having a field day, we need someone like Kofi Boakye to hold them in check,” a resident said.

Another added: “This action by Delta Force will never have happened under Kofi Boakye’s watch. Everyone in Ashanti Region knows what he’s capable of doing. There was even a drastic reduction of armed robbery cases while he headed the region, he really waged a war against armed robbers. If he’s no more here, then a person of his caliber should be brought here to put things under control.”

The current Ashanti Regional Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah took over from COP Kofi Boakye in February 2017.
