Students of the Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping (GSSM) say they will picket the Flagstaff House if  President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo does not intervene to stop the closure of the school.

The school is closed down momentarily at the behest of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu. He’s also asked that the school’s staff be reassigned.

This comes on the heels of clashes between the students and some land guards over the school land on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

Speaking at a Presser Wednesday, the SRC president, Bright Joseph Nsiah, called on Mr Akufo-Addo to intervene and prevent the school from being closed down, lest it will picket to protest the move.

“Our next action is to march to the office of the presidency and if the need arises that we need to spend the night, we would do that. The students of Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping are ever ready. As it happened with the nurses, definitely we can do same, we would sleep over there. We want to protect and defend the legacy of Sir Gordon Guggisburg,” he stated.

“Can you go to Achimota School and ask them to vacate their premises? Can you go to the University of Ghana and ask them to vacate their premises? So why are you treating the ordinary students of Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping this way? It is unfair and we demand immediate intervention from the presidency,” he added.

Reports say the land has been allotted to foreign investors to build a shopping mall.

However, the Lands Commission has denied it insisting the place has been reserved for the construction of its head office complex.
