Some residents of Tema who value money more than their lives put themselves in harm’s way Thursday afternoon when they scrambled for money that had been spilled by an armed robber during an exchange of gunfire.
This happened after one of two motor-riding armed robbers who had robbed two Lebanese men of GHC100,000 was forced to abandon the stolen money as the police pursued him amidst exchange of gunshots.
The robbers trailed the Lebanese who had gone to withdraw money from the Zenith Bank branch near the Tema Metropolitan Assembly succeeded in robbing them and sped off.
Luckily, a police patrol team that was in the area was informed of the incident and immediately pursued the robbers.
The robbers sensing danger begun shooting the police officers, but the cops who had superior firepower returned fire hitting both robbers in the process.
One of the armed robbers died on the spot. But the other robber who was said to be bleeding profusely tried fleeing with the money. As the Police officers pursued him further in a crossfire, he threw the money which was in two polythene bags on the ground in a bid to distract the police officers. He later fell around Rana Motors and fell.
Amidst the exchange of gunfire, some reckless and daring residents rushed to pick the money that had spilled on the ground.
The Tema Regional Police Crime Officer ACP Kissi Frimpong in an interview with Kasapa News expressed shock over the conduct of the residents and roundly condemned their action.
He disclosed that out of the GHC100,000, the Lebanese victim retrieved only GHC2,500.
“To my utter shock, some residents came scrambling for the cash whilst there was still an exchange of gunshots between the police and the robber. It is difficult to understand some Ghanaians sometimes. Your fellow man’s money has been taken from him by armed robbers if you’ve been able to gather some of the money give it to the victim who was at the scene or the police officers. Out of the huge amount, the victim had only GHC2,500 back.”
“Because the people who scrambled for the money were many it will be difficult for the police to identify any of them. Unless someone took a video of the action then we can have a look at it and arrest the culprits. Sadly, the scrambling for the money occurred before the very eyes of the Lebanese victim. At least they should have shown love to this man who was in distress by giving his money back to him.”
