A former deputy Local Government Minister, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent parliamentary polls held in the Asokwa constituency of the Ashanti Region as a complete sham.
He has called on the Party’s leadership to cancel the polls and organize a new one.
“This election is a complete sham. The basic tenets of a free and fair election were thrown to the dogs. A grand conspiratorial scheme had been put together by the constituency election committee, the handpicked council of elders, council of patrons, constituency election committee, the electoral commission representatives and the police to put aside the will of delegates and voters in Asokwa.”
In a twelve-point letter requesting for the nullification of the Asokwa parliamentary election and addressed to the flagbearer and other executives of the party at the constituency, regional and national levels, Mr. Jumah said a re-organised election will be in the interest of the party.
“A properly organized and supervised election that will reflect the will of the constituency must immediately be put in place. Indeed, it will be in the interest of our party to do that immediately to forestall mass defections to the opposition.”
Among the grievances of Mr. Jumah, who is a former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area are the non-inspection and verification of election materials, non-adherence to agreements made between the stakeholders, non-accreditation to him as a candidate and his agents, and circumvention of laid down rules and procedures to favour his competitor.
Mr. Jumah, affectionately called Kofi Ghana was heavily beaten by his main competitor, Madam Patricia Appiagyei the incumbent MP.
He polled 158 of the total valid votes cast against the incumbent’s 326.
